MS.MS. Look Book: Lulu’s Vintage

history-teacher-2 MS.MS. Look Book: Lulu’s Vintage, March 1, 2011, by s.baker

Walking into Lulu’s Vintage reminds me of the candy store scene in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, but instead of candy the walls display beautiful hand-picked vintage fashion. Lulu’s Vintage is not a cluttered or overstuffed shop, the high ceilings, inset racks and vintage display cases immediately give the viewer the impression that only the best is to be found. After meeting Lulu, who personally seeks and selects the inventory, and with her assistance shopping the racks, I would say my first impression held true.

Sarah Baker: What’s your fashion weakness?

Lulu: I have multiple fashion weaknesses but I would say my biggest one is accessories. I am always on the lookout for fishnets and woven tights that are unique. I am especially attracted to hats (cloche and wide brimmed styles), purses (novelty and structured), jewelry (fun and beautiful), shoes (cute flats for everyday wear and alluring heels for work and evenings).

SB: What’s your favorite color right now?

Lulu: Red. Today I bought red tulips, I have a red petticoat peeking out from under my skirt, I am wearing a red beaded necklace and red and white beaded earrings, a red silk headband, as well as the red lipstick shade by MAC that I wear almost daily. On Valentine’s Day I watched one of my favorite movies, Red from the Trois Couleurs series. When I watched Red I could see it’s influence on the movie Amelie’s color scheme (another favorite movie of mine). For me red can connote passion as well as comfort.

SB: Dream alternate life?

Lulu: Having my own vintage clothing store is most definitely a dream realized. I have lots of different dream alternate lives. A dream alternate life would probably involve traveling through all of Europe scouring through everyplace looking for all that is interesting and beautiful, taking photos, shopping and living life to the fullest.

SB: What is your theme song right now?

Lulu: Sing Your Life by Morrissey. This song I could declare as a theme song for my entire life. I try to think daily of what makes me happy and about what I love, and to take time each day to do at least one thing that I relish in.
A theme album for life would be The Last Broadcast by the Doves.

SB: What’s your favorite thing about Portland fashion?

Lulu: I like the fact that if people want to they can be individuals with their style here in Portland.

SB: What three words would you use to describe Lulu’s Vintage fashion?

Lulu: Colorful, unique, and bright.
