Interview with Maryam of Beech St Parlor

Picture 8 Interview with Maryam of Beech St Parlor, July 25, 2011, by a.raimondi

When I first moved here I would meander around on my bike looking for the neighborhoods and strips and clumps of businesses I knew existed nestled in the cute residential neighborhoods around me – but I had no idea where. That’s how I stumbled upon Tiga which quickly became one of my staples. Killer food, ginger bourbons, and really good music.

Coming up, this weekend marks the celebration of the opening of Beech Street Parlor and we can’t wait!

AR: Tiga is one of our favorite NE bars. The food, the cocktails, the always awesome vinyl being played… What can we expect from Beech Street Parlor?
maryam hanafi troncelliti: more delicious infusions/cocktails made by my sister djamilah, an entirely different food menu, our constantly growing cast of djs, so many tasty beers, and minors allowed until 9pm. the space is beautiful, full of charming corners to sit in.

AR: I was excited to hear that Henry Kibit (formerly Noble Rot, DOC) is involved. Your favorites from the new menu?
mht: the smoked pork shoulder on the ham/cheese sandwich and the kielbasa (+pierogie) are made in house and are delicious. i also enjoy the seasonal items that change according to what henry finds at the farmers market. we had a nice raw squash salad with fennel, basil, and chili flake…grilled broccolli with parmesan and lemon…a potato tart with chard…there is plenty to look forward to.
henry’s veggie burger is really good too!

AR: Any great local discoveries in your new neighborhood?
mht: Brass Tacks Sandwiches!! they are just down the street on N. Vancouver.
let’s see..Planned Parenthood!? and, well, it’s pretty nice to be so close to tiga. a perfect little bike ride..may the barhopping begin.

AR: Song of the summer so far?
mht: oh man, it’s tough to narrow it down. my Kinks tape has been in heavy rotation in my car, Danava while opening the bar, and then Radio 23 just hooked me up with a load of archives from live tiga dj sets. i have so much to listen to right now…playlists galore.
“ms.ms. mixtape” courtesy of tiga/radio23 is not a bad idea…

Make sure to check out their opening party Saturday July 30th!!!
The night also offers an opportunity to send off our lovely Angela Previdelli to graduate school. See you there!
