R. Stevie Moore @ Holocene, August 31, 2011
I just want you to read it exactly as Holocene tells it to us:
“Improviser, composer, arranger, producer, musical conceptualist, comedy writer, vocal stylist, filmmaker, sketchpad artist, drama example, self-taught instrumentalist and bon vivant, r.stevie moore was born 1952 in nashville TN to famed elvis bass player bob. since ’66 rsm has recorded nearly 2,000 songs on over 400 very original homemade albums of alarmingly idiosyncratic variety and styles, often considered a seminal pioneer in the DIY ethic. remaining virtually unknown, he quietly resided in new jersey as curator of his own museum. until now… back in tennessee. LOUDLY SHOUTING!”
The Video Gong Show @ Hollywood Theatre, August 29, 2011
What a great idea. The last Monday of every month at the Hollywood Theatre is The Video Gong Show. This is all about you and your fellow audience members so bring your newest projects, found footage, home videos, or favorite YouTube clips and then join in on the judging.
Bargain Hunting 101 @ Crystal Ballroom, August 28, 2011
Twice a year the Crystal Ballroom is filled with discounted treasures from local artists and boutiques. This is where you find those one-of-a-kind items, plus samples, limited run, and past season clothing! I am particularly excited about checking out the duds from Carolyn Hart and Reif Haus
I love the PDX Collective Sale – not only do you get really good prices, you get really great variety all while just hanging out in the lovely space of The Cleaners and drinking an italiano from the Stumptown next door. Perfect.
Daniel Johnston, Motopony @ Wonder Ballroom, August 26, 2011
Daniel Johnston is like a character out of a favorite novel. He is sensitive and strange and sees life in a way that you can only nod your head to, but never really understand. Through Daniel Johnston’s song writing he humbly and shyly invites us into his world and it is impossible not to be absolutely wooed
Every time that I have seen AU live, I have been blown away. How two men can create so much sound is beyond me. Luke Wyland adds layer upon layer of carefully crafted sounds while Dana Valatka thrashes it out on the drums in the most epic and awesome way. With Operative and Archers
I’m not sure if you’ve ever headed over to Holocene for their weekly Apertivo Happy Hour but if not: it’s time. From 5-8p on Friday’s you buy a happy hour cocktail and hang with friends while snacking on the free appetizers that come flowing out of their delicious kitchen. Let’s be honest – sometimes this counts as dinner. Aaaaaand this week is so enticing because not only are the treats good, so will be the beats. The boys from Nurses are going to be behind the decks with a set of “outsider pop, art rock, psych and dub jams!”
The psychedelic powers of Portland and Seattle come together at Holocene to bend our minds with music, movement, film and sculpture. Not only is this an opportunity to peer into the mind space of the artists, but also to float upon the sea of our own conscious and unconscious
Between spending a month in the mountains of Vermont this summer, and the rest of my time with Jordan, Josh, and Vince, my summer has been filled with country. Good thing TLC Country Night with DJ Split Ditch and Gordon Organ is happening this Thursday. Since Country Land at Kenton Club ended I think this might be my new jam. Have you been?
