MIXTAPE FOR MS.MS.: DJ Ramophone
MIXTAPE FOR MS.MS.: DJ Ramophone, August 5, 2011, by a.raimondi
Yesterday I sat in Albina Press on Hawthorne “talking” with Matt Mathis AKA DJ Ramophone. We passed my computer back and forth for a typed out conversation while having side dialogue with Kyle the barista about mutton chops and meth capitals. It was really fun. Like this MIXTAPE FOR MS.MS. – which you can download here. You can also listen to Matt DJ tonight at SHARE. We promise not to talk about muttonchops or meth labs.
hi matt.
I don’t know about this Ayni. The last time I gave an interview with your beautiful Cronie, she edited out all the good stuff. Is MS.MS. a place for squandering dialogue?
i dont know what you mean. details of the good stuff matt?
Well, let’s just say it rhymes with ‘Mold Shanties”
well anyone who came to my birthday party will appreciate that. on to other things, what have you been up to these days?
Well, I’ve been learning la lingua bella di Italiana. So, I haven’t been reading or writing so much. I owe MS.MS. more contributions, I know.
maybe the next one will be in Italian. hm? maybe we should start an albina press couch section italian conversation group – allora.
what about music? what’s going on with DJ Ramophone?
He’s been licking his wounds since NO ONE came to see me at Beech St last month. Except one person, Eric Doyle, my one last friend still here from high school. Otherwise, I’ve been doing what every DJ does, I presume, scouring for records. I found some pretty perfect old jazz records the other night. Found some old O.M.D. I’m looking forward to seeing how it all gels tomorrow night.
where do you do your digging?
Well, wherever. Though I’m pretty loyal to Clinton St Records and Exiled. I’ve found some GEMS on Discogs.com and ebay…you know, .com. I’m waiting for a super rare 7″ I found on ebay for 2 lbs.
(also this whole mutton chop conversation you’re having with kyle while im typing – the answer is no. no mutton chops for you. no.) im excited for tomorrow night – art making, art looking, beer drinking, dancing? tell me about this mix. favorites?
I tell you, Aynipants, I can’t get enough of The Wedding Present, which kicks off the mix. Like The Cure being played by Shellac and sung by Ian Curtis. But that Elvis song is a killer, part of my favorite era of his. Elvis playing soul! That Ronnettes song is a heartbreaker. I put it up there with the best of the ’60s. And it goes really nicely with the GBV track. The mix has some mix faux pas, which I won’t point out, but it is as it is. What is YOUR favorite song?
i feel exclusive playing favorites. as in – let me listen many more times before i choose. though much of my favorite computer songs (ones that live on my computer) come from you. from when you worked at extracto and i threw an americano on my keyboard and lost everything that wasn’t on my un-updatable 6 year old Ipod. like crystal stilts. and you know. other things.
i do love the mix though. and summer time. you? on summer? on things to do in summer?
Well, I don’t really do “summer things”. Though I’m enjoying the weather finally being warm. This winter was brutal for me. C-c-COLD!!
i have an interview in a few minutes. i mean not this interview with you – but being interviewed for a job. im filled with butterflies. phew. what should i do?
Nothing. Butterflies are beautiful. At least you don’t have caterpillars.
ok you go to tabor. ill go home and have a skype video conversation about my future. then lets remeet tomorrow for some art and music and then try and go to the river. ya know. so you can develop some summertime activities and i can jump off a rock.
I’ve heard of this “River”. I look forward to it Ayni. Just as long as I don’t have to take my shirt off. Or get out of the car.
